Process Over Product
In high school I hated English/Language Arts. For the most part it was because of the way writing was being taught. We were given an assignment and it was expected that we knew what we were doing. Sure, I learned "Conjunction Junction whats your function" and other elementary ways of forming words into sentences. However, we were never taught the idea of writing badly. Since my first semester, I have grown incredibly as a writer. Prof. Kearns taught us about the writing process and that writing badly is one of the most important things to remember. Although writing badly isn't a means to an end, it does help you to break free from the perfect writing our high school teachers expected of us. I only hope that my daughter, who has already been seen writing poetry at seven, is taught to write as a process. I think Writing for product severely limits your creativity.
